UN eyes scaling back its Ethiopia-Eritrea mission

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - The Security Council voted on Thursday to decide by mid-May whether to scale back the U.N. peacekeeping mission in Eritrea and Ethiopia if the two former foes fail to quickly comply with council demands.

UN orders review of its Ethiopia-Eritrea mission

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - U.N. Security Council members have agreed to decide by mid-May on a plan for scaling back the U.N. peacekeeping mission in Eritrea and Ethiopia if the two former foes fail to resolve their differences in the next few weeks, council diplomats said on Tuesday.

 United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan has informed the Security Council of his intention to appoint a Jordanian Major-General with extensive peacekeeping experience as Force Commander of the UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE).
