UN orders review of its Ethiopia-Eritrea mission

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - U.N. Security Council members have agreed to decide by mid-May on a plan for scaling back the U.N. peacekeeping mission in Eritrea and Ethiopia if the two former foes fail to resolve their differences in the next few weeks, council diplomats said on Tuesday.

 United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan has informed the Security Council of his intention to appoint a Jordanian Major-General with extensive peacekeeping experience as Force Commander of the UN Mission in Ethiopia and Eritrea (UNMEE).

Eritrean Former Diplomat Expresses Reservation

on Issa as Ambassador to Khartoum

Former Eritrean ambassador to China (now opponent) Mohammed Nur Ahmed told (smc) that Issa Ahmed Issa who was nominated by Eritrean regime as an ambassador to Sudan is not competent person.


He said the man is in charge of security interests related to Sudan Ethiopia, Djibouti and Yemen.
The former ambassador, however acknowledged that if Eritrean regime was serious on normalizing relation with Sudan would have suggested professional diplomat to engage the position.
On the other hand the former Eritrean diplomat was wonder how; a country like Eritrea suffers from lack of democracy set to host negotiation on peace for eastern Sudan.

UN Days Numbered in Ethiop-Eritrea

 Addis Ababa, Apr 10 (Prensa Latina) The UN mission to keep security and peace between Ethiopia and Eritrea (MINUEE) warned on Monday that its 4,500 blue helmets in this region will not stay forever.

Frank Kreiza, UN official met on Sunday with Eritrean President Isaias Afeworki, with whom he discussed peace in this area.

Kreiza has planned to talk in this capital with Ethiopian President Meleze Zenawi.

The official began this week a serious stage of a current tour of Africa, because he is trying to encourage both countries to conclude a definitive treaty along their common border.
