ASMARA, June 22 (Reuters) - Eritrea may require foreign assistance if rains fail this year in the drought-prone country, which had slashed food aid in a drive for self-reliance, a senior U.N. aid official said on Friday.

PFDJ Thugs Continue Harassing And Rounding Up Civilians in Eritrea

KEREN: Travellers from Eritrea confirmed that on 28 May 2007, members of the PFDJ security apparatus disrupted this year’s celebrations of St. Mary (Mariam Daarit) in Keren by launching a massive rounding up of civilians gathered for that occasion. Our sources reported that the rounding up was so violent with inhumane beatings and unparalleled intimidations that the population was left paralyzed.  A few persons who gathered some courage to question the logic of this cruel action on the holy event of Mariam Daarit were harangued and intimidated to silence.

Gunmen hold 23 Egyptian fishermen off Eritrea coast

SUEZ, Egypt, June 8 (Reuters) - Gunmen are holding 23 Egyptian fishermen after attacking their boat in international waters off Eritrea's Red Sea coast, an official with Egypt's fishing syndicate said on Friday. Bakri Aboul Hassan, head of the syndicate's office in Suez where the captured boat is registered, said the fishermen were taken captive on their boat after coming under heavy gunfire a week ago while fishing near the Horn of Africa nation.

Press watchdog chides EU over Eritrea stance

ASMARA, June 6 (Reuters) - An international press watchdog criticised the European Union on Wednesday, saying its policy of engagement with Eritrea had failed after a local journalist was arrested and locked in a metal container.
