STOCKHOLM, Sweden—Five editors-in-chief of Sweden’s biggest newspapers initiated a joint campaign for the release of the jailed Swedish journalist, Dawit Isaak, last week. He has been imprisoned in the Northeast African country of Eritrea since 2001.

UNITED NATIONS, April 7 (Reuters) - The U.N. Security Council declared on Tuesday that Eritrea has ignored its demands for a withdrawal of all its troops from its Horn of Africa neighbor Djibouti.

The European Union’s approval of the a 122 million Euro in development aid package for Eritrea sends the wrong signal to the brutal regime in Asmara, in a country run by an oppressive dictatorship where human rights are systematically violated and its impoverished people live in constant fear it is difficult to understand the EU’s decision. Given the blatant disregard that the Eritrean regime has for the legally binding principles set out in the Cotonou Agreement Eritrea, it is in clear breach of legal obligations required to receive this.

Sources of Eritrean People’s Party confirmed that the security forces of the Eritrean regime have arrested 13 residents of Adi Guer, in the province of Seraye between March 10 and 20, 2009. The regime accused the parents of aiding their children to flee the country across the Eritrean-Ethiopian border. Eritrean People’s Party has identified the names of the parents.

A joint delegation of the Eritrean Democratic Party (EDP) and the Eritrean People’s Party (EPP) on Friday, 27 March 2009, visited the headquarters of the European Union and its executive arm, the European Commission in Brussels, Belgium, to submit a memorandum of protest against the planned €122 million grant to the dictatorial regime in Asmara. The delegation believed that this grant is being made in contravention of the conditions required for such allocations according to the Cotonou Agreement between Europe and Africa.

Principles of human rights, justice and rule of law are desirable but they are not primary objective of the European Union when dealing with aid recipient governments. European interests and the geo-strategic importance of a recipient nation often supersede legal or moral principles. The Eritrean government is a lucky beneficiary of this standard practice. That´s why, unlike Zimbabwe, European aid has been flowing and will perhaps continue to flow to Eritrea without strings attached.
