Asmara - Eritrea on Friday dismissed allegations by arch-foe Ethiopia that it was involved in "terror attacks" to destabilise its Horn of Africa neighbour.
Ethiopian intelligence officials on Thursday claimed to have substantial evidence, that it did not reveal, that the Eritrean government was involved in attacks on public places and government targets in Ethiopia. Eritrean Information Minister said: "We don't want to waste our time to even respond to such claims. "They are talking to themselves, not to others." Eritrea regularly accuses Ethiopia of being a US "puppet", claiming the United States was behind Addis Ababa's recent military action in Somalia. In December, Ethiopian troops helped Somali government fighters oust a powerful Islamist movement from Mogadishu. Ethiopia and Eritrea fought each other from 1998-2000 in a border dispute. Despite a peace deal in 2000, they have yet to define the status of their 1 000km frontier. Analysts have accused Eritrea and Ethiopia of opening a proxy war in Somalia because of their unresolved dispute, with Asmara said to have been backing the Islamist forces, an accusation it vehemently denies. |
