Event on human rights crisis in Eritrea PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 10 April 2007
A panel discussion will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. on April 12 as a part of the UT global effort project, Ready for the World.  The discussion, which will be held in Room 1200 of McClung Tower, will address the human rights situation in Eritrea, a small country on the westeren coast of the Red Sea, by Ethipoia. The event will be organized by Johanna Stiebert, Suzanne Wright and Tricia Hepner, all UT professors and members of Amnesty International .  The event will be co-sponsored by Amnesty International USA and UT's Ready for the World.

"The purpose of the event is to celebrate the tenacity of Eritrea's freedom fighters, as well as the art of this vibrant part of the world.  We also want to inform the university and wider community about the recent history of Eritrea and how and why circumstances led to the current lamentable political and human rights situation", said Stiebert.

Eritrea has the longest standing army on the African continent.  This area has a harsh judicial system and frequently imprisons members of religious minorities as well as journalists working for independent newspapers.  Eritrea has become a major area of global political concern.

Presentations will be given by four speakers including Dr. Yonas Mehari, who will talk about Eritrean refugees; Aaron Berhane, editor-in-chief and founder of an Eritrean newspaper; Dr. Tricia Hepner, who will talk about the history of Eritrea; and Adiyah Ali, a field organizer for Amnesty International USA.

After the discussion there will be a candle-lit walk held in memory of Joshua Yohannes, a veteran freedom fighter who died in prison from torturous injuries in 2001. The walk will go from McClung Tower to 607 Union Avenue.

All events are open to the public.  For more information contact Tricia Hepner at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it or Johanna Stiebert at This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
