An ELF-RC delegation headed by Mr. Mengisteab Asmerom, responsible for the ELF-RC Office for Information and Culture as well as Chairman of the provisional leadership of the Eritrean Democratic Alliance (EDA-1), on 27 July 2007, met for exchange of notes on Eritrea with USA team headed by Ms Deborah Malac, Deputy Director of East African Affairs in the USA State Department in Washington DC.
Other members of the ELF-RC delegation were Mr. Alem Yohannes, Deputy Head of ELF-RC foreign relations and in charge of information for the ELF-RC Easter Zone in USA; and Ms. Akberet Ahferom, in charge of financial affairs for the ELF-RC Easter Zone in North America. The delegation exhaustively expounded to the senior State Department official the appalling political, economic and social conditions in Eritrea today as well as the plight of Eritrean refugees and the human rights abused meted out by the dictatorial one-man regime of Isayas Afeworki against the Eritrean people. In particular, the ELF-RC delegation stressed the importance of urgent humanitarian intervention of the United States to protect the lives of Eritrean refugees who are under the threat of forced repatriation at this moment. The State Department officials expressed deep regret of what is going in Eritrea and believed that the human rights abuses being perpetrated by the regime in Eritrea have not so far drawn the full attention of the world community. The officials also wished to have more contacts of this type between the two sides. It is to be recalled that Mr. M. Asmerom is winding his mission to the United States and is leaving for Europe on 28 July to attend the second regular meeting of the Revolutionary Council of ELF-RC in Frankfurt, Germany. |
