US broadcaster CBS is reporting that Israeli troops attacked a convoy in Sudan in January, killing 39 people and destroying 17 trucks suspected of carrying illegal weapons bound for Egypt. Although Sudan said the US was responsible for the attack, CBS now claims that US Pentagon sources say it was carried out by the Israeli air force. Israel has refused either to confirm or deny the claim. The victims of the attack came from Sudan, Eritrea and Ethiopia

In January, the US and Israel signed an agreement intended to stop the smuggling of weapons from Egypt into the Gaza Strip. This prompted fighters from the Palestinian Hamas party to fire rockets at targets in Israel and that, in turn, led to the recent heavy Israeli assault on the Gaza Strip.
